what it is…
Rally Retro Day is the first event of its kind for Rally cars in Australia. The aim is twofold: firstly to provide and event for owners of historically significant rally cars and faithfully built replicas, where they can display their cars and, if desired, have a bit of fun with them as well.
Often the owners won’t want to enter a full rally with them and in many case the cars would not be eligible to run with the changing of regulations and safety standards since these cars were competing.
It’s also a chance for the rest of us to have a look at these cars often hidden away in sheds and hopefully experience many of them in action, on a short dirt course.
So often a winning rally car is used to donate parts to another car, sold to another owner who repaints it and changes its specification or is simply pushed aside and left to rot. We hope Rally Retro Day will inspire the preservation and restoration of more significant rally cars from the sport’s history.
what you’ll see
At Rally Retro Day you will see 40 rally cars or more, that were competing from the early 1960’s to the mid 1980’s. Some will be in almost ‘as rallied’ condition, some will have been restored and some will be replica’s of iconic rally cars of the past.
They will be presented in order of age so you will be able to see the evolution of rally cars before your eyes. You will be able to vote for your favourite rally car to receive the “People’s Choice” award.
As well, around half of the cars will be taking parts in 1km demonstration runs on a specially designed Rally Retro dirt circuit so you can see them and hear them doing what they were built for. There are 3 elevated viewing areas around the track to choose from.
There will also be displays in “Rally Alley” of modern rally cars from the current Victorian Rally championship, plus a few special displays from the recent past.
For spectators, Rally Retro Day opens at 10:00 am. (Make sure you park inside the venue – there is no parking on Beach Rd.)
The static displays are on all day. There are demo runs on the track from 11:15 am and 2:30 pm. The People’s Choice voting closes at 1:00 pm and the Presentation is at 2:15 pm.
See the full Spectator schedule on the Spectators page.
Entrants and exhibitors RRD starts a bit earlier… the venue opens at 7:00 am for RRD display cars and Scrutiny starts for on-track cars at 8:00 am. There is a Drivers Briefing at 10:30 am and a group photo at 12:45 pm.
See the full Entrants/exhibitors schedule on the Entrants page.
For all of us, Rally Retro Day concludes at 4:00 pm.
Photo opportunities abound – in the display paddock and around the track.
You will be able to walk amongst the rally cars and talk to the owners, who in some case are past Rally Champions themselves.
Out on the track there are three areas to choose from all of which are somewhat elevated above the track.
There will also be some period signage around the display area which could make an interesting back drop for a “selfie”.
A Programme for the day, including pictures and information on all the displayed rally cars, will be available to all cars entering the venue, when collecting the entry fee.
Where is it?
Rally Retro Day will be held at the Geelong Motorsports Complex, Beach Road, Avalon. The Complex is 46 km from the Westgate Bridge via the Princes Freeway, heading towards Geelong.
Take the Avalon Airport Freeway exit. Entry to Rally Retro Day is on the left.
Special note: Parking on the road outside the venue (Beach Road) is prohibited. Please drive into the venue. Entry to the venue is $10 per car, collected at the entrance. Proceed then as directed to the parking area.
More info, including a bit of a map, on the Getting there page.
Food vendors and coffee vans will be in attendance from approximately 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. Food should also be available at nearby Lara.
Toilet facilities, including disabled toilets, are at the venue.
Wheelchair access: While the terrain is generally flat, it is unsealed and unpaved (ie, dirt and grass) so wheelchair access to some of the public areas may be challenging, but not impossible.
Your conduct and safety at Rally Retro Day
Motorsport is Dangerous! Your safety is paramount.
At times, when cars are moving to and from the track, you will be asked to leave the display area for the safety of all.
Supervise your children for safety.
Rally cars can be hard to see out of when maneuvering. Never assume a driver can see you.
Always stay behind the tape barriers.
Always obey the directions of the Rally Retro Retro Day team members. They have your safety in mind.
Keep dogs on a short leash and well away from the track.
